True Parents’ Rights and Involvement

Laura will ensure more parental involvement in education rather than more government. The current school board keeps parents in the dark. Parents must be valued and respected as the primary educators of their own children. All children deserve their parents' voices in the formation of their education and, if necessary, parental representation and due-process in any discipline process. .

Laura is concerned that parents have been told that Family Life Education is a factual, preventive program when it is neither. Family Life Education has been misrepresented to parents. Human Growth and Development is presented as a “preventive” program. However, if you look at its objectives, which you can do online https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/family-life-education-fle, there are no objectives to reduce risk behaviors. FLE lessons have never been evaluated for effectiveness in prevention. The lessons may even be increasing risky behavior without our knowing it. As one child said when she was opted out, “But dad, I like learning about the things I’m not supposed to do.”

The school board must ensure:

  • Impartial discipline to students, eliminating current disproportionate disciplining of boys, students with disabilities and  minorities (Hispanics and African American).
  • Parental insight into use of computers as replacement of textbooks ("wise use of technology")
  • Parental understanding of student health and well being risks associated with excessive use of computers  (Long-term sleep deprivation causes drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, and depression of the immune system)
